A series of interactive discussions about the future of planning, preservation, housing and sustainability in Santa Fe, by way of better understanding our past
To better inform solutions to the contemporary challenges of our shared built environment, ReVisioning History proposes a critical re-examination of the collective values and visions that have historically guided Santa Fe’s plans for the future.
This series consists of public discussions organized around a set of interrelated topics that have, and continue to shape our physical environment, our daily lives and our communities: planning, preservation, housing, and sustainability. Each session will pair contemporary experts in architecture, planning and community development with plans and studies commissioned by the City of Santa Fe over the last 50 years. Analysis and participatory discussions will inform, inspire and animate new collective visions for a more livable, equitable and sustainable Santa Fe.

ReVisioning Planning provides an examination of the past, present, and future of the City Different’s land use and planning efforts with a focus on the values that shape policy and development outcomes for our community. This session will specifically address the role of regulatory frameworks, community process, city planning efforts, and urban design strategies in delivering greater access to affordable housing, promoting sustainable development, and creating equitable and healthy communities.

ReVisioning Preservation provides an opportunity to look back on the last century of historic preservation efforts, ideas, and outcomes in Santa Fe and explore how we can advance this vital endeavor while also examining ongoing shifts towards more equity and inclusion in historic preservation practice nationally. This session seeks to generate discussion about the diverse meanings historic places hold among the people of Santa Fe, the diversity of experiences residents have had in interfacing with historic preservation regulations here, and the interplay between the tangible and the intangible in conserving cultural heritage.

ReVisioning Sustainability provides a comprehensive look at select macro-scale questions and possible solutions for comprehensive sustainability in The City Different. The built environment is the major source of global demand for energy and materials that produce the greenhouse gas emissions that cause climate change. In order to avert its worst impacts, how can local policies that govern transportation, water use, renewable energy, and building construction meaningfully contribute to meeting crucial carbon reduction targets in the next 10 years? How can these same measures simultaneously allow Santa Fe to achieve increased density, smarter growth, sustainable preservation, and equitable access to clean energy?
ReVisioning Housing

ReVisioning Housing brings together both contentious and collaborative perspectives on achieving equitable and sustainable housing outcomes in Santa Fe. A diverse set of panelists will first contextualize the current housing crisis as a social justice issue and explore financial and regulatory development constraints. Speakers will then illustrate urban design and regulatory solutions, and will identify the broad community-based and value-oriented strategies essential to changing how we plan, design, discuss, and develop future housing in Santa Fe.
